Why a paid converter is the one worth using

Free converters bury you in ads, cap your batch size, watermark your output and monetise your files. Video to MKV Cyborg is funded by you — so it works for you.

50 files in one batch

Convert up to 50 videos at once instead of one-at-a-time. No queue, no per-file wait.

Anonymous & private

No ad or analytics tracking on what you convert, and your files are never sold or shared for marketing.

Smaller files, no watermark

No watermark, no ads around the download, and no re-encoding — the picture and sound inside your MKV are the exact bytes you uploaded.

Free video converters exist because ads and your uploaded files pay for them — and they still cap you at a couple of videos, burn a watermark into the output, or quietly re-encode and lose quality. Video to MKV Cyborg starts at €1 for a day, installs nothing, converts up to 50 files at once across 12 input formats, and re-encodes nothing at all. No pop-ups, no ad tracking.

Phone & camera

MOV, 3GP and M4V

iPhone MOV clips and 3GP phone recordings rewrapped into Matroska. Nothing is re-encoded, so a MOV that took an hour to export converts in seconds.

Windows classics

AVI and WMV

AVI and WMV files from old camcorders, screen recorders and archives. Matroska will hold their original codecs untouched, which is exactly what an archive container should do.

High-quality containers

MKV

MKV in, MKV out is a clean rewrap — useful when a file has a damaged index or was written by software that produced a container other players choke on.

Web formats

WebM and FLV

WebM is already a subset of Matroska, so this one is close to a rename. FLV is the old Flash container: its streams survive the move, and MKV can actually store them.

Legacy & broadcast

MPG and MPEG

MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files from DVD rips, broadcast captures and old software, moved into a container that modern media servers index properly.

Animation

GIF

Animated GIFs wrapped as MKV. Niche, but Matroska is one of the few containers that will take a GIF stream as-is without converting it to video first.

All 12 inputs: MP4, M4V, MOV, WMV, AVI, MKV, MPG, MPEG, GIF, FLV, 3GP, WEBM, up to 50 files per batch. Matroska accepts essentially any codec, which is why every one of these converts by stream copy — the video and audio are moved across untouched rather than re-encoded.

Converting a specific format to MKV

The exact conversion you came for, and why each one is worth doing.

MOV to MKV

Apple QuickTime Movie

iPhone and QuickTime recordings. MOV is fine on a Mac and awkward everywhere else; MKV keeps the same video and travels better.

AVI to MKV

Audio Video Interleave

Microsoft's 1992 container. It has no proper support for modern subtitles or multiple audio tracks, and its index breaks easily — moving the same streams into Matroska fixes both.

MP4 to MKV

MPEG-4 Part 14

The most common conversion here, and the fastest: MP4 and MKV usually hold the same H.264 or HEVC video, so the streams move across untouched. People do it to add subtitle and audio tracks that MP4 handles poorly.

WMV to MKV

Windows Media Video

Windows Media files that most media servers and players outside Windows refuse to index. MKV holds the identical streams in a container they understand.

WEBM to MKV

WebM

WebM is formally a restricted profile of Matroska, so this is the smallest conversion of the set — the container is relabelled and the VP9 or Opus inside is untouched.

FLV to MKV

Flash Video

The old Flash container. Flash is gone but the video inside is often still fine, and Matroska is one of the few modern containers that will accept it without re-encoding.

3GP to MKV

3GPP Multimedia

The cut-down format older phones recorded to. Small files, poorly supported today, and preserved exactly as they are by the move to MKV.

M4V to MKV

Apple MPEG-4 Video

Apple's variant of MP4, and it converts identically — the extension is the only real difference. DRM-protected M4V files bought from iTunes cannot be converted by any tool.

MPG to MKV

MPEG-1 / MPEG-2 Video

MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 from DVD rips and TV captures. The streams are old but perfectly valid, and Matroska stores them without the seeking problems raw MPEG has.

MPEG to MKV

Moving Picture Experts Group

The same MPEG-1/MPEG-2 video as a .mpg file, written with the longer extension — converted identically.

GIF to MKV

Graphics Interchange Format

An animated GIF moved into Matroska as-is. Unusual, but MKV is permissive enough to store the GIF stream without turning it into video first.

When MKV is the right container

MKV is the container that holds anything and throws nothing away. Here’s where that matters:

W

Plex, Jellyfin and media servers

MKV is the container home media servers are happiest indexing, with proper chapter, subtitle and multi-audio support.

R

Keeping the original quality

Nothing is re-encoded, so an MKV made here is bit-for-bit the same video you started with — unlike converting to MP4 or WebM, which often cannot be.

P

Subtitles and multiple audio tracks

MP4 handles both awkwardly. Matroska was designed for them, which is why it is the standard for anything multilingual.

F

Archiving footage

An open, well-documented container that stores any codec is exactly what you want for something you will still need to open in ten years.

T

Files with a broken index

An AVI or MPG that will not seek properly often plays perfectly once the same streams are rewrapped into MKV.

S

Old archives worth keeping

AVI, WMV and MPG footage moved into a modern container without touching a single frame.

Whatever the source, drop up to 50 files and get MKV files back.

Common questions

Getting started

What is Video to MKV Cyborg?
Video to MKV Cyborg converts video files — MP4, M4V, MOV, WMV, AVI, MPG, MPEG, GIF, FLV, 3GP and WebM — into Matroska (MKV). Drop your videos in and it hands them back as MKV, up to 50 at a time, with the video and audio copied across rather than re-encoded.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Video to MKV Cyborg runs in your browser — no extension, no desktop software, no permissions. The conversion happens on our servers, so even a phone can convert a large batch without slowing down.
What devices and browsers are supported?
Video to MKV Cyborg works in any modern browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS 12 or later. Because the work happens server-side, a phone or tablet converts just as fast as a desktop.
Why is this better than a browser extension?
Four reasons: there is nothing to install and no browser permissions to grant; you can convert 50 files in one batch instead of one at a time; conversion runs on our servers, so it doesn’t slow your machine down or depend on your hardware; and we don’t sell or share your files, which is how most “free” extensions are funded.

Formats, batches & quality

Which formats can I convert to MKV?
MP4, M4V, MOV, WMV, AVI, MKV, MPG, MPEG, GIF, FLV, 3GP and WEBM — 12 formats in total. MKV is accepted as an input too, which produces a clean rewrap; that is useful for a file with a damaged index or one written by software whose output some players refuse.
What is MKV, and should I use it?
MKV is Matroska, an open container format. It is not a codec: it is the box the video and audio sit in, and it will hold almost any of them, along with multiple audio tracks, subtitles and chapters. Use it for archiving, for anything multilingual, and for home media servers like Plex and Jellyfin, which handle it best. Do not use it as your only copy if the video needs to play on a phone, a smart TV or an upload form — most of those still expect MP4.
Why is MKV conversion so much faster than MP4 or WebM?
Because it does almost no work. Matroska will hold any codec, so every supported input can be stream-copied — the video and audio are moved into the new container byte for byte. Converting to MP4 has to re-encode formats it cannot carry, such as WMV and FLV, and WebM has to re-encode everything because it only accepts VP9 and Opus. Here, a ten-second 1080p file rewraps in well under a second.
How many videos can I convert at once?
Up to 50 files per batch. Drop them all in at once — no queue, no per-file waiting. There’s no limit on how many batches you can run while your pass or plan is active.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed size cap. Large videos simply take longer to upload and process, so use a stable connection for big files.
Will converting lose video quality?
No — and unlike most conversions, that is not a careful claim. Matroska accepts essentially any codec, so the video and audio are copied straight across rather than re-encoded. The result is bit-for-bit identical to your source: same resolution, same frame rate, same bitrate, no generation loss. It is also why conversion takes seconds rather than minutes, even for a large file. Nothing is downscaled and no watermark is added.
How do I get the best quality conversion?
There is nothing to get right. Because the streams are copied rather than re-encoded, the output quality is entirely determined by the file you upload — a better source gives a better MKV, and converting the same file twice changes nothing.
Can I adjust the output settings?
There is nothing to adjust — the conversion copies your existing video and audio into a Matroska container without touching them, so there are no quality or bitrate settings that could apply. If you need a smaller file, run the MKV through Compress Video Cyborg.

Pricing, privacy & limits

How much does it cost?
A €1 day pass gives you 24 hours of unlimited conversions. Yearly (€6) and lifetime (€30) plans are also available (+ VAT). Every plan unlocks all 78 AppsCyborg tools, not just this one.
How long does my download link stay valid?
60 minutes. After that the link expires and the converted files are removed — just re-run the conversion if you need them again.
Do you track or keep my files?
No. We don’t run ad or analytics tracking on what you convert, and your files are never sold or shared for marketing. Uploaded videos are processed only to build your MKV files and are removed once the 60-minute download window closes.
Is there a limit on how often I can convert?
No. While your day pass, yearly or lifetime plan is active you can run as many 50-file batches as you like — there is no monthly quota and no per-conversion charge.
Can I convert MKV back to another format?
Yes, with the matching converter — this one goes to MKV. Video to MP4 Cyborg takes MKV and produces an MP4 for phones, TVs and editors, and Video to WebM Cyborg targets the web. Both are included in your account.
