You'll need a cable, not an email. Amazon stopped accepting MOBI through its send-to-device service, so copy the file over USB into the documents folder on the reader. That's also the honest reason MOBI is a legacy choice now: it works on the hardware that needs it and nowhere else new. The conversion itself is a trade — a fixed PDF page becomes a river of text, which is excellent for a report or a novel and poor for a magazine, a two-column paper or anything where the layout carries meaning. MOBI & your device

How do I get the MOBI onto the Kindle?

By USB. Plug the reader into a computer and it appears as a drive — drop the .mobi into the documents folder, eject, and it shows up in your library under the name of the file you uploaded. Amazon no longer accepts MOBI through its email-to-device service, so the cable is the route.

Is MOBI obsolete? Should I use ePub?

Largely, yes — Amazon has moved on and modern Kindles handle ePub. MOBI is worth choosing for exactly one reason: it's what an older device understands. If your reader is recent, or it's a Kobo or similar, use the ePub version instead.

How do I tell which format my Kindle wants?

Easiest test: copy any ePub into the documents folder over USB. If it appears in the library, your device handles ePub and you should use that. If it doesn't appear at all, you need MOBI — which is what this tool makes.

What makes this the "e-reader" version?

Nothing, and we'd rather say so than invent a difference. The two MOBI tools once differed by a single flag that changed how scanned pages were fitted to the screen — and scans are refused here now, so that flag has nothing left to affect. For a PDF with real text, this tool and the phone version produce the same file. That's because reflowed text has no page size of its own: your device decides. Use whichever page you landed on.

Will my PDF convert well?

What happens with a scanned PDF?

It's refused, and you're told why. A scan is a picture of a page — there's no text in it to reflow and nothing here does OCR. We could hand you a MOBI of page images instead, but measured on the same document that comes to 13 MB of pictures that even desktop e-book software won't reopen, so it isn't worth your €1. What tends to come out badly?

Two-column journal PDFs, because reading order has to be guessed. Wide tables designed for A4 have nowhere to go on a 6-inch page. Magazines, music scores and anything where the design carries the meaning. Straight prose in one column comes through well. Convert one and judge it before doing a stack.

Do page numbers survive?

No — reflowed text has locations rather than pages, because a page depends on the font size you chose. Occasionally an old running head or page number survives as a stray line in the flow; most documents come through clean.

Can I send a whole folder at once?

Up to 50 files a go, 200 MB each, and they come back together. Each one converts on its own, so a file that fails — or a scan that gets refused — doesn't take the rest with it.

Can it convert a password-protected PDF?

No. Locked or DRM-protected files won't open here, and removing that protection isn't something this does. It fails cleanly and tells you, rather than handing back something broken. Use it on documents you're entitled to read and reuse.
