What you get, and what you should know first
A MOBI is a Palm database wrapping the book's markup, so turning one into a Word document means unpacking that and mapping it onto Word's own. It maps well for text and reasonably for structure: what comes back is a genuinely editable document rather than a wall of text. Two things are worth knowing before you start — the first is why most conversions fail, and the second is a limit this format has that its EPUB sibling does not.

Copy-protected books are refused
DRMBooks bought from Kobo, Google Play Books or borrowed through a library are locked to your account, and nothing here can open them. The file is refused rather than half-converted. This is the single most common reason a conversion does not work.

The honest caveat: chapter titles are not Word heading styles
This is the one place MOBI does worse than EPUB, and it is worth knowing before you start. Converting a MOBI produces chapter titles that look right — large, bold, clearly headings — but calibre writes them with its own generated style names and no outline level. Word's navigation pane keys off outline level, so it stays empty, and Insert → Table of Contents finds nothing to build from. The contents page at the front of the document does work, and every one of its links resolves, so navigating the book is fine; what you do not get for free is Word's own structural view. Fixing it is a one-off job: select a chapter title, apply Heading 1, then use Word's format painter or Select All Text With Similar Formatting for the rest. If you would rather not do that at all, the same book as an EPUB does set outline levels — ePub to Word Cyborg is the better route when you have the choice. Beyond that, everything structural transfers: paragraphs, emphasis, lists, images and the book's metadata.

Why does my book fail to convert?
Almost always because it is copy-protected. Books bought from Kobo or Google Play Books, and anything borrowed through a library, are locked to the account that bought or borrowed them, and no converter can open them — ours refuses the file rather than producing something broken. Books you made yourself, files from Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks, review copies and anything explicitly sold DRM-free all convert normally.
How can I tell whether my MOBI is protected?
Where it came from is the strongest clue: shop purchases and library loans are protected, files you exported yourself or downloaded from a public-domain library are not. If a reading app other than the shop's own will open the file, it is not protected. Unlike an EPUB there is no folder to look inside — a MOBI is a Palm database, and the marker is a single encryption field near the start of the file. This tool reads that field and tells you plainly when it is set, rather than failing with a generic error.
How many files can I convert at once?
Up to 50 per batch. Each result is named after the book it came from. One book comes back on its own; a batch comes back as a single ZIP.
Is there a file size limit?
200 MB per book, far more than a MOBI needs — you would only approach it with hundreds of high-resolution images embedded. A conversion that somehow runs longer than five minutes is stopped rather than left hanging. For scale, a 126-page novel converts in about half a second.
Will the Word document look like the book did on my e-reader?
No, and no converter can manage that. A MOBI has no fixed pages: your reading app decided where lines and pages fell, on the fly, using the font size you chose, and none of that is stored in the file. The Word document gets Word's own pagination instead, on A4. What does carry across is the text and its structure — paragraphs, bold and italic, lists, images and a clickable contents page.
Do I get .doc or .docx?
DOCX, the modern format, which opens in Word 2007 and later as well as in LibreOffice, Pages and Google Docs. If you specifically need the old binary .doc, open the result and save it in that format from Word.
Can I convert a book I bought?
Only if it came without copy protection, and most shop purchases do not. This is a technical limit rather than a policy we chose: the protection is designed so that only the shop's own app can open the file, and we do not attempt to work around it. Plenty of shops do sell DRM-free MOBIs, and those convert like any other file.

Is there a limit on how often I can convert?
