On your phone

Which app will open it?

On an iPhone, Apple Books handles ePub with nothing to install. On Android, Google Play Books does, and free readers like Moon+ Reader or Librera do more. Kobo's app reads ePub too. Tap the file and your phone offers whatever you have.

What makes this the "phone" version?

Less than the name suggests, and we'd rather measure it than claim it. For a PDF that already has text, this tool and the e-reader version run the same conversion and give you the same book — reflowed text has no page size of its own, so your app decides. The difference is real only for scanned PDFs, where the pages have to be fitted to a target screen: measured on the same scan, this one produces 27 pages at 293.5×394 points against the e-reader's 38 at 244.6×328.3. Bigger pages, fewer of them, a smaller file. That is the whole of it.

Will my place sync across devices?

Only if your reading app syncs it — the ePub is just a file, so progress belongs to whichever app you open it in. Add the same file to that app on both devices and most will keep your place.

My reading app wants MOBI, not ePub.

Then use PDF to Mobi Phone Cyborg instead, which is the same conversion with a MOBI on the way out. It is worth checking first, though: almost every phone reader made in the last decade prefers ePub, and MOBI is only needed by older apps and Amazon hardware. One pass covers both, so trying the wrong one costs nothing.

Will my PDF convert well?

What happens with a scanned PDF?

It converts, but not into reflowable text. A scan is a picture of a page, so there is nothing to reflow and nothing here does OCR. Instead the pages are refitted to a phone-sized page and come back as images: readable, but you cannot change the font size or search it. To tell in advance, try selecting a sentence in your PDF viewer — if the text highlights, it's real text and it reflows. If you're reading on e-ink rather than a phone, the e-reader version fits those same pages to a smaller screen instead.

What comes out badly on a phone in particular?

Wide tables are the worst case — a table built for A4 has nowhere to go in a narrow column, and no conversion fixes that. Two-column journal PDFs need the reading order guessed and can interleave oddly. Magazines and music scores lose the thing that made them work. Prose in one column is the happy case. Convert one and judge it before doing a stack.

Do images and colour survive?

Yes. Photographs, charts and diagrams are carried across untouched — measured on a test document, the embedded colour JPEGs come out the far side at exactly the same size they went in. They are not recompressed and colour is not stripped. Very wide diagrams will still be small on a phone, because the screen is.

Can I send a whole folder at once?

Up to 50 files a go, 200 MB each, and they come back together. Each one converts on its own, so a file that fails doesn't take the rest with it.

Can it convert a password-protected PDF?

No. Locked or DRM-protected files won't open here, and removing that protection isn't something this does. It fails cleanly and tells you, rather than handing back something broken. Use it on documents you're entitled to read and reuse.
