What is Ultra Compress Video Cyborg?

A web app that re-encodes your video with the x265 (HEVC / H.265) codec to make the file smaller. You upload one video, it runs the encode on our hardware, and you download an MP4 at the same resolution and length.

Which formats can I upload?

Twelve: MP4, MOV, MKV, M4V, AVI, WMV, MPG, MPEG, FLV, 3GP, WebM and GIF. Whatever you send, you get an MP4 back — HEVC can't legally live in some of those containers, so the output is always MP4.

How is this different from the standard compressor?

This one runs a real x265 (HEVC) encode, which is slower but squeezes much harder. The standard Compress Video Cyborg does a straightforward re-encode: quicker, less dramatic. If you're up against a hard size limit, use this one.

The result

How much smaller will my file get?

It depends entirely on how your video was encoded to begin with. An older or high-bitrate file can lose more than half its size; a video that was already encoded efficiently may barely shrink at all. There's no way to know before running it, which is why you never pay in file size — see the next answer.

Can the file come back bigger?

No. Re-encoding an already-efficient video can genuinely produce a larger file, so when that happens we hand back your original instead. You'll never download something bigger than what you uploaded.

Will it look worse?

The resolution, frame rate and length are unchanged, and the audio track is copied across untouched wherever the format allows. It is a lossy re-encode, so a very close look at fine detail can show the difference — for most footage, at normal viewing distance, it doesn't.

Will the file play everywhere?

The output is tagged for broad compatibility, so modern phones, TVs, Macs and current browsers handle HEVC fine, and VLC plays it anywhere. Older Android devices, older Windows machines without the HEVC extension, and some upload portals and editing timelines still expect H.264 — in that case run the file through Video to MP4 Cyborg, or use the standard compressor.

How long does it take?

Minutes rather than seconds — x265 trades time for size, and long or high-resolution videos take longer. Keep the tab open until the download button appears.

When does the download link expire?

Re-encoding a video doesn't change who owns it. Personal use, research and internal records are usually fine — get permission before publishing or selling the result, and don't use it on material you're not allowed to copy.
