Two steps. That’s it.

1

Drop your photos in

JPG, PNG or WEBP
Drag them in or browse for them, up to fifty at a time. No channel mixer, no presets to audition — nothing to set.
2

Download the photos

headshot-final-bw.jpg Full size · no watermark
Ordinary image files at the size you sent them — drop one straight into a CV, a listing or a print order. Several photos arrive as a ZIP.

What to expect. Colour becomes brightness, so what mattered in your photo is now tone: a face lit from the side, a dark suit against a pale wall, strong shadow. Two things that were different colours but equally bright — a red logo on a green shirt — can end up the same grey, which is the one thing to check before you print. Want strokes and paper white instead of a photograph? That’s Pencil Cyborg. Your download link stays live for 60 minutes.

Why not just use a filter?

Because a phone filter re-saves a smaller copy with its own contrast baked in, it only reaches the photos already on that phone, and most web converters hand back a reduced image with a logo on it.

Full size, clean

The same pixel size you sent, with nothing written across the corner.

No account to cancel

A €1 day pass is a one-off payment. Nothing renews, nothing bills you next month.

Your photos stay yours

No gallery, no feed, no camera-roll permission. Files go when the 60-minute link expires.

Fifty at a time

A whole set of headshots or listing photos in one go, back as a single ZIP.

If the photo is already on your phone and only ever going to a chat app, the built-in filter is fine — nobody needs to pay for that. This is for the other case: a file on your computer, a set of images that all have to match, or something going to print, where you want the original resolution back untouched apart from the colour. A subscription editor does that too, for the price of a monthly plan and an afternoon of learning it. BW Cyborg is a drop box and a Download button, paid for by the €1 that got you in — so nothing has to be paid for with your photos.

What people use it for

Taking the colour out is usually about consistency, cost or attention.

Headshots & press photos

Mono is the safe format for a bio, a speaker page or a press kit — it sits on any brand colour.

Sets that must match

Photos shot on different days under different lights stop clashing once the colour is gone. Send the whole set in one run.

Cheaper printing

Newsletters, flyers and handouts print mono for a fraction of colour — convert first and see it properly.

Family photos to frame

A wall of black-and-white prints looks deliberate; the same shots in colour rarely do.

Scans & documents

A photographed page or receipt reads better in mono, and the file is smaller to send.

Backgrounds behind text

A mono photo under a headline or a slide title stops fighting the type for attention.

Whatever it’s for, drop the photos and download them in mono.

Need something slightly different?

Want it drawn in graphite rather than photographed in grey? Pencil Cyborg. After colour and brushwork? Painting Cyborg. Just need the file smaller? Compress Image Cyborg — all included in one account.

Common questions

Getting started

What is BW Cyborg?
A web app that converts your photographs to black and white. Drop pictures in, download the monochrome versions at full size — no watermark, no ads, nothing to install.
How is this different from a pencil sketch?
This keeps the photograph and removes the colour — every detail and texture stays. Pencil Cyborg instead redraws the picture as graphite strokes on paper white, so most of the frame ends up blank.
Which formats can I send, and what comes back?
JPG, PNG and WEBP all work, along with GIF, BMP and TIFF. What comes back follows what you sent: a JPG returns a JPG, and a PNG returns a PNG, so a screenshot or a scan is never quietly re-compressed. WEBP is the one exception — it returns a JPG, because the converter cannot write WEBP.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes — pick the photos from your camera roll on Android or on iOS 12 and higher. Nothing to install, and no permission to your whole library.

Quality & results

Is the quality the same as the original?
You get the same pixel dimensions you sent, with the detail intact — only the colour information is gone. The conversion follows brightness the way your eye does rather than just averaging the channels, so skin, sky and foliage land where you would expect them to. Send the biggest original you have rather than a copy that has already been through a chat app.
Which photos work best?
Anything with real light in it: side-lit faces, texture, shadow, a clear difference between bright and dark. The photos that disappoint are the ones whose subject only stood out by colour — a red coat in green leaves becomes two similar greys.
Can I choose the contrast, or a sepia tone?
No sliders and no tints — one drop, one clean black-and-white conversion, which is the point. The lever you have is the photo: brighten it or add contrast before uploading, and run it again for nothing.
Can I convert several photos at once?
Yes — up to 50 in one run, and they come back as a single ZIP. A day pass has no limit on how many runs you make, so a whole set of listing shots or headshots in one sitting is fine.
Will the file be smaller?
Usually a little. A colour photo stores brightness plus two channels of colour, and taking the colour out drops both — so the same picture at the same quality has less to store. The conversion never re-saves at a higher quality than the file you sent, which is what keeps that true. If you need it much smaller for email or a website, run the result through Compress Image Cyborg — also included.
Can I use it on a scan or a screenshot?
Yes. A scanned page, a receipt or a screenshot converts like anything else, and because a PNG comes back as a PNG the text stays crisp instead of picking up compression fuzz around the letters.
My phone photo came back sideways once. Does that still happen?
No. Phones store a portrait photo sideways with a tag saying which way up it goes, and that tag used to be dropped. The rotation is now applied to the pixels before anything else, so the photo comes back the way you took it.
When does the download link expire?
After 60 minutes. Save the images as soon as they’re ready — after that the link expires and you would have to upload the photos again.

Pricing, privacy & rights

How much does it cost?
Creating an account is free; you pay when you download. A €1 day pass gives you 24 hours of unlimited conversions. Yearly (€6) and lifetime (€30) plans are also available (+ VAT), and every plan unlocks all 79 AppsCyborg tools — with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
What happens to my photo?
It’s used to make your conversion and then deleted along with it when the 60-minute link expires. Nothing is kept, published, shown in a gallery or used to train anything, and requests are anonymous — no ads, no trackers.
Can I use it commercially?
If the photo is yours, the converted version is yours — print it, publish it, sell it, no attribution needed. If someone else took it, removing the colour doesn’t transfer their rights, and a recognisable person still has a say in commercial use.
Still have a question?
We usually reply within a day.
